First American edition, first printing, with 1912 on the title page, octavo; English translation by Constance Garnett, the first book in her series of Dostoevsky's novels; bound in publisher's blue-gray gilt-stamped cloth, top edge gilt (three minor areas of foxing to one page; spine sunned, a bit rubbed with extremities bumped and minor fraying at spine ends); 7 3/8 x 5 in.

Dostoevsky's influential and final work, Freud called it "the most magnificent novel ever written." The Brothers Karamazov was first adequately translated into English more than 20 years after its initial serialized publication in 1879 and 1880 in Russky Viestnik [The Russian Messenger]. It has since been translated into numerous languages and its impact on the world of science and letters is renowned, inspiring Albert Einstein, Martin Heidegger, Cormac McCarthy, and countless others.
