Dwight, Mabel (1875-1955)
Cemetery Ciboure.

ca. 1927-1929.

Ink and watercolor on paper, signed, titled, and dated in pencil on lower blank margin of watercolor, matted; 9 ¾ x 13 ½ in.

Known for her prints and watercolors, Mabel Dwight studied with Arthur Matthews at the Mark Hopkins Institute in the late 1890s, but only began her formal career in the 1910s. While traveling around the world with Helen Bartlett Bridgman, Dwight's interest in printmaking was renewed. Many of her watercolor originals inspired prints. Her candid humor draws comparisons to Peggy Bacon. The Ciboure Cemetery is located in North-Western France. Whether Dwight painted in real-time or from memory is unknown.
