With the first World War over, American soldiers began returning home (340,000 troops returned in June of 1919 alone) and finding employment for them was of utmost importance for the Department of Labor. In this image a soldier is pictured, literally, within a window of opportunity. Against an industrial cityscape and arable fields, the doughboy is removing his uniform in anticipation of all the work waiting for him. Rawls 274.
