American-born Kauffer rose to prominence as a graphic designer in Great Britain where his work for Shell and the London Transport System, among others, assured him a place on the list of great 20th century graphic artists. In 1940 Kauffer returned to America where he worked on accounts for both American and Pan American Airlines; by 1948, he had already designed 23 posters for American Airlines. This is his only work for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad. The image reflects intimate knowledge of A.M. Cassandre's design for the Sweepstakes, in 1935 whose depiction of a horse and jockey are handled in an almost identical manner. Kauffer 330.
