E. MCKNIGHT KAUFFER THE TOWER OF LONDON. 1936.
20x13 7/8 inches. Vincent Brook, Day & Son, London.
Condition A-: pinholes, discoloration and minor creases in margins.
One in a series of three, smaller format posters Kauffer created for London Transport, the others are Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace. "Kauffer has won for himself a leading position among poster designers by his strongly contemporary style. His posters are made up of familiar elements . . . heightened in effect to make them strange and attractive" (Purvis p. 20). Built in the 11th century, the Tower of London has been a prison, hosting some of the world's most illustrious prisoners (including Anne Boleyn and Lady Jane Grey), a museum for Britain's Crown Jewels, and even a royal zoo! To its ancient history Kauffer adds contemporary typography, showcasing his "excellent solution of the problem of making lettering a necessary part of the poster as a whole . . . Romantic in spirit though at the same time thoroughly masculine in character" (Purvis p. 23). Purvis p. 23.
