Situated on the opposite side of the Tigris River from present-day Mosul, the ancient city of Nineveh was briefly the capital city of the Assyrian Empire (705 to 612 B.C.E.). The city is the site of the tomb of the prophet Jonah, beneath the mosque of Nabi Yunis on Al-Tawba Mountain. It is extremely unusual to find early travel posters promoting tourism in Iraq.
