British born Israel Zangwill (1864-1926) was a novelist and a Zionist who is considered the father of modern British-Jewish literature. Beginning in 1892 he wrote three novels on Jewish themes, Children of the Ghetto, Ghetto Tragedies and The King of the Schnorrers. As a Zionist he met with Theodore Herzl during his visit to London in 1896 and attended the first Zionist Congress. A fervid believer in the formation of a Jewish homeland he founded the ITO (Jewish Territorialists Organization). The King of Schnorrers was first printed in series form in the Idler (see Swann Art Nouveau Posters, sale 1991, lot 36), in 1894. It is a story about Jewish life in London in the 18th century satirizing the differences between Ashkenazim and Sephardim as seen through the "adventures" of the king of the beggars, Manasseh Bueno Barzollai Azevedo da Costa. For this production in Vienna the artist creates an intriguing, early expressionist image, depicting characters, too blurry to view, excellently contrasted against a gray wall and a yellow background.
