EARL HORTER (1883-1940) GRAND CENTRAL TERMINAL / NEW YORK CENTRAL LINES. 1927.
40 3/4x26 3/4 inches, 103 1/2x68 cm. Latham Litho. & Ptg. Co., Long Island City, New York.
Condition A-: repaired tears, minor restored loss and creases in margins; minor abrasions and restoration in text.
The interior of the Main Concourse in New York City's Grand Central Station, looking east. This image, taken from an etching, "revealed a Modernist influence . . . Horter filled the renowned mixing space with sketchily abstract figures, making it pulse with energy as bands of sepia-toned light gave depth to the vast expanse beneath the barrel-vaulted ceiling" (Zega p. 68). Notice the cars at the far end, a long-lost feature of the station. Zega fig. 89.
