Oil on artist's board, circa 1876. 300x250 mm; 12x10 inches. Initialed in oil, lower right recto. Probably ex-collection Benny Goodman, according to a label on the verso.
An oil study for the painting Milton Dictating to his Daughters, 1876, now in the Blanden Art Museum, Fort Dodge, Iowa. There was another study of Milton, presumably for the same painting, sold at the estate sale of Johnson's work, American Art Galleries, New York, 1907, lot 112.
This work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné in preparation by Patricia Hills, Cambridge, MA. With a letter from Patricia Hills dated November 22, 2008.
