Additional Details

First edition edited by the Abbé de L'Escluse des Loges, who revised the narrative and changed it from the third to the first person. The Mémoires, which were actually composed by Sully's secretaries, were originally published in 1638. As finance minister to Henri IV, Sully oversaw the reform of the fiscal system of France. Brunet V, 588-89; Cohen-de Ricci 961; Rothschild 2238; Schumpeter, page 169. Here as in the Rothschild set, a portrait of Charles, Cardinal de Bourbon, has been substituted for that of Charles, Cardinal de Lorraine, in Volume 1, and an additional portrait of Anne d'Autriche bound in Volume 2.
