EDGAR DEGAS
Alphonse Hirsch.

Drypoint and aquatint printed in brownish black on cream laid paper, 1875. 116x58 mm; 4 5/8x2 3/8 inches, full margins. Second state (of 2), with the aquatint. A very good, early, proof-like impression of this extremely scarce print.

Adhémar notes only 2 other impressions in either the first or second state in public collections (Fondation Doucet, Université de Paris; and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston).

According to Adhémar, this portrait of Hirsch (1843-1884), who was an amateur printmaker, friend of Degas and art advisor in Paris during the mid- to late 1800s, was made by Degas during a gathering at Édouard Manet's house, along with fellow artists Marcellin Desboutin and Giuseppe de Nittis, on February 20, 1875. Delteil 19; Adhémar 24.
