EDGAR DEGAS
Deux Danseuses.

Aquatint and drypoint on cream laid paper, circa 1877-78. 159x118 mm; 6 1/4x4 1/8 inches, wide (full ?) margins. One of only approximately 6-8 proofs. Partial Arches watermark. With the artist's estate ink stamp (Lugt 657, lower right recto). Ex-collection C. G. Boerner, New York; private collection, New York. Exhibited and illustrated in Edgar Degas: The Painter as Printmaker, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 1984, pp. 100-101.

A very good impression of this extremely scarce, experimental print, with inky plate edges, scraped lines and burr.

Delteil notes only 8 known impressions; Adhémar records 6 proofs in the Degas sale of 1918. Reed and Shapiro note the locations of 6 impressions--including 2 with the atelier stamp, one in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and this impression. Delteil 33; Adhémar 37; Reed/Shapiro 33.
