Wheeler, thanking for birthday congratulations, inviting him to visit the laboratory, expressing gratitude for offering to send four volumes of records from a lawsuit (the "Quadruplex Case"). 1 page, 4to, "From the Laboratory of Thomas A. ". . . It would be immensely pleasing to me to have the record of the proceedings in the Quadruplex case, as I have only a few fragments. It is very kind indeed of you to offer to send these four volumes to me. . . ."
In 1878, the lawsuit brought by the Atlantic and Pacific Telegraph Company against Western Union and others--during which Edison was examined by both parties--was decided in favor of Western Union. The suit concerned the patent applications for duplex and quadruplex telegraph technology. Wheeler was employed as an attorney in the case by the Atlantic and Pacific Telegraph.
