EDMOND PETITJEAN (1844-1925) PARIS VIVANT. Circa 1911.
59x42 1/2 inches. La Lithographie Nouvelle, Asnieres.
Condition B+: restored losses in top corners; restoration in bottom margin; vertical and horizontal folds.
Unlikely though it seems, Petitjean was an artist who was known for his classical landscape paintings. Quite the contrary to his paintings this is a witty, well designed, distinctive, Cappiello-esque poster, thoroughly suited to the humor magazine it is advertising. Where Petitjean differs from Cappiello is in his use of an intricate background, intricate details on the woman herself, and a very graphic usage of the blank paper to delineate some of the image.
