EDNA BOIES HOPKINS
Mountain Women (Two Women in White on a Hill).

Color woodcut on Japan paper, 1917. 257x230 mm; 10 1/4x9 inches, full margins. Signed and inscribed "No. 10" in pencil, lower margin. A superb impression of this extremely scarce color wodcut.

The two women in the woodcut are fellow artists Ethel Mars and her lifelong partner Maud Squire, shown hiking together in Provence. Hopkins had met Mars at the Cincinnati Art Academy around the turn of the century and taught her to make woodcuts. Mars and Squire also became friends in Cincinnati and around 1905-06 moved together to Paris, seeking artistic enrichment and lifestyle freedom. Mars and Squire became part of Gertrude Stein's circle in Paris and were immortalized by Stein's Miss Furr and Miss Skeene, 1908-11.

We have found only one other impression of this woodcut at auction in the past 25 years. Vasseur 17.
