EDOUARD MANET
Guerre Civile.

Lithograph printed in black on violet tinted chine appliqué, 1871-73. 396x508 mm; 15 5/8x20 inches, full margins. Second state (of 2). Edition of 100 or fewer. Printed by Lemercier, Paris. Pale scattered marginal spotting, several short repaired edge tears well outside the image. A superb impression of this very scarce print, with all the subtle tonal variations printing clearly.

According to Fisher, the edition size of 100 may actually have been smaller than that recorded by the printer Lemercier in the Depot Legal and that noted in the lithograph text "Tiré à cent exemplaires" lower left (Jay Fisher, The Prints of Edouard Manet, Washington, DC, 1985, p. 95). We have found only 12 impressions at auction in the past 20 years and even fewer in this complete, better condition. Guérin 75; Harris 72.
