EDOUARD MANET
Olympia (grande planche).

Etching printed in dark, brownish-black on ivory laid paper, 1867. 163x242 mm; 6 3/8x9 1/2 inches, full margins. Likely an intermediate state of proof between the third and fourth states (of 4), with part of the artist's name lower left still printing. Indiscernible watermark. A superb, richly-inked impression.

According to Harris, this print was the first version made after the infamous painting of 1863, not the smaller etching which was included in Zola's pamphlet (see lot 77). The composition and proportions of the present work resemble the painting much more closely than the smaller version. Guérin 40; Harris 52.
