Kollmann (1837-1915), a German art collector and mystic, supported Munch's artwork and was portrayed by the artist multiple times throughout his career, once in a lithograph and twice in oil. This drypoint was likely used as a study for a double portrait of the sitter and the Danish writer Sten Drewsen, which is now in the Kunsthalle, Hamburg. Schiefler 159; Woll 181.
