EDVARD MUNCH
August Strindberg.

Lithograph, 1896. 505x378 mm; 19 7/8x14 7/8 inches, full margins. Fourth state (of 5). Signed in pencil, lower right and titled in pencil, verso. Printed by Auguste Clot, Paris. A very good impression.

August Strindberg (1849-1912) was a Swedish poet, writer and a close friend of Munch during his early years in Berlin and in Paris in 1896. Munch painted a portrait of him in 1892 (Museum of Modern Art, Stockholm) and produced prints of him throughout 1896, stating in a diary entry dated July 1, 1896, "Paris is really lovely...it is perfect to work here—I stick to lithographs and etching...I have finished a lithograph of Strindberg."
