EDVARD MUNCH
Neutralia.

Color lithograph, 1915. 815x600 mm; 32 1/4x23 3/4 inches (sheet), wide margins. Woll's state "A 2" printed as a poster with the exhibition text below and with the artist's initials lower right. Printed by Halvorsen & Larsen, Oslo. A very good impression of this extremely scarce color lithograph.

We have found only 7 other impressions at auction in the past 30 years. Woll cites 15 impressions in public collections (only 6 of which are in U.S. collections).

Munch's color lithograph was used on this poster for "The Norwegian Art Exhibition," Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen, November-December, 1915. According to Woll, "The title refers to the neutral countries, Denmark and Norway, during World War I. There are several drawings in the Munchmuseet, Oslo, showing how the subject deleoped into this poster. The subject depicting the women picking apples was used as one of the paintings in the Oslo University Festival Hall decorations." Schiefler 459; Woll 527.
