Album of 112 cartes-de-visite portraits of Victorian students at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, including Edward Carpenter (signed), and others depicting an array of costumed theatrical figures, including Ellen Terry.

Albumen prints, the images generally measuring 3 3/4x2 inches, 9 1/2x5 1/2 cm, the mounts 4x3 inches, 10x7 cm, most with a photographers' imprint on on mount verso and several with period signatures, in ink, on mount recto, and all with later, penciled caption information identifying the photographer on the album pages; 5 are by Camille Silvy. 4to, debossed morocco, defective brass clasps; all edges gilt. 1861-65.

Carpenter, was a pioneering figure associated with the Uranians, a small literary circle whose social ideals were influenced by practices in Ancient Greece, particularly erotic relationships between men and boys.
