Cucuel was a California-born painter who trained at the San Francisco Art Insitute and in Paris. He provided some illustrations for the October 1904 issue of Sunset. The Los Angeles Herald wrote on October 9, 1904, that "the Sunset magazine published for October an edition de luxe which is a distinct literary and artistic achievement . . . the articles on the [army] are sumptuously illustrated from photographs and drawings, both of which are remarkable for their breadth of treatment and their perfect reproduction. Nothing finer than the "After the Day's Maneuvers," by Edward Cucuel, has been brought out by any periodical" (Los Angeles Herald, Oct 9, 1904, p.1).
