Gorey depicts the eccentric characters of Menen's novel, surrounding the grand tower of Fonthill Abbey. Pictured, clockwise from top left: a young William Beckford, the Hon. William Courtenay, the Scottish millionaire John Farquhar, and Lady Margaret Gordon.
