Additional Details

Not since his first public art exhibition which took place at the Mandrake Book Shop near Harvard in the early 1950s did Gorey create illustrations without a specific work or commission in mind. But in 1974, he drew new works solely intended for a gallery exhibition which was being organized by The Graham Gallery in Manhattan. Gorey created 46 original pieces of art for the show which was called Plain & Coloured Drawings by Edward Gorey. In an interview from 1977 he stated that the exhibition was a unique experience for him and a rare treat for his admirers--Wilkin, Karen; editor, Ascending Peculiarity: Edward Gorey on Edward Gorey, New York, 2001. A 4-page gallery booklet was printed listing the drawings, illustrating five of the pieces, and including a short essay by Brendan Gill about Gorey's work. The show was successful enough that Graham featured Mr. Gorey again in 1975.
