EDWARD GOREY
Costume Design for Jonathan Harker, Dracula.

Watercolor and ink on paper, 1977. 185x126 mm; 7x5 inches. Signed in ink, lower right recto. With the artist's ink stamp, upper right recto.

Ex-collection Alan Coates, who played Jonathan Harker in the 1977 stage production of Dracula, for which this is a costume study.

With--A copy of the original cast program for the production, which reproduces the drawing.

Edward Gorey won a Tony Award for his costume design and earned an additional Tony nomination for Scenic Design for Dennis Rosa's 1977 Broadway production of Dracula, which starred Frank Langella and Alan Coates. Particularly well known for his popular animated introduction to the PBS series Mystery, and his playfully imaginative books, self-illustrated with a decidedly ominous Victorian and Edwardian air, Gorey is regarded the greatest American illustrators of the 20th century.
