EDWARD HOPPER
Night Shadows.

Etching, 1921. 175x210 mm; 7x8 1/4 inches, full margins. Edition of approximately 500. Signed in pencil, lower margin. Published by The New Republic, New York. A superb, richly-inked impression of this important print, with strong contrasts.

Characteristic of Hopper's work, Night Shadows places the viewer at a perch high above the street, observing a lone figure lit only by a street lamp. The voyeuristic point of view and ambiguity of scene suggest themes of isolation, solitude and despair. Hopper used this downtown crossroads near the Hudson River in his 1913 painting, New York Corner (also known as Corner Saloon, Museum of Modern Art, New York). As ordinary as the place may seem, the composition forecasts something dark and foreboding. Zigrosser 22.
