Woodland Pool is a very recognizable example of the modernist landscapes of Edward L. Loper, one of Delaware's finest 20th Century artists. Born in Wilmington, Delaware, Loper studied at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia for over 10 years. He is often associated with his work for the WPA Art Project from 1936-1941. He also taught at the Delaware Art Museum, Lincoln University and the Jewish Community Center in Delaware. Loper's work is in many permanent collections including the Philadelphia Art Museum, the Delaware Art Museum and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
