EDWARD M. BANNISTER (1828 - 1901)
Untitled (Bridgewater, NH).

Watercolor on thin wove paper, circa 1880s. 178x267 mm; 7x10 1/2 inches. Initialed in watercolor, lower left.

Inscribed "Barn no longer stands…; Bridgewater, NH, Road opposite Fowler … Foster Place; Second place after treetops " in pencil, upper right on the cardstock backboard.

Provenance: private collection, Florida.

This charming watercolor is a very scarce work from one of Edward Bannister's sketchbooks. He recorded the scenery of the White Mountains of New Hampshire on sketching trips through the 1880s.

Anne Louise Avery, art historian and Edward Bannister expert, reviewed the work in 2021. She confirmed this work is from one of Bannister's sketchbooks and that Bannister went on a number of sketching trips to the White Mountains. The watercolor will be included in Avery's forthcoming catalogue raisonné on the artist.
