EDWARD M. BANNISTER (1828 - 1901)
Untitled (Landscape with Bridge and Cows).

Oil on canvas board, 1874. 203x254 mm; 8x10 inches. Signed and dated in oil, lower right.

Provenance: private collection.

This Barbizon scene of cows and a carriage in a rural landscape is an early Rhode Island painting by the artist. In 1870, Bannister and his wife moved from Boston to Providence, where he became an active professional artist and respected leader in the artistic community. Bannister famously won the first prize in painting at the U.S. Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia with Under the Oaks two years after painting this scene. Bannister also helped found the Providence Art Club in 1878, which became the model for the Rhode Island School of Design.
