EDWARD M. BANNISTER (1828 - 1901)
Untitled (Rock Study with Clam Diggers, Rhode Island).

Oil on linen canvas, circa 1880s to early 1890s. 406x610 mm; 16x24 inches. Signed in oil, lower right.

Provenance: private collection, Long Island, NY; acquired at Clarke Auction Gallery, Larchmont, NY; private collection, Ontario (2014).

This canvas is a fine example of Bannister's mature period of painting en plein air. By the late 1890s, Bannister moved away from the Barbizon style of a poetic or idealized pastoral landscape. He became more interested in portraying the natural beauty of the rugged New England coastline - with attention to realism with his studied depictions of the rocky outcrops and foliage. This charming view, while dominated by his naturalist interest in the rock formation of the shore, also captures a glimpse of distant clam diggers in the sandy flats of a Rhode Island inlet.

A detailed authentication report, dated March 16, 2014, by art historian Anne Louise Avery, who is currently working on the first catalogue raisonné of Edward Bannister's work, will accompany the sale of this painting.
