EDWARD MCKNIGHT KAUFFER (1890-1954) AMERICAN AIRLINES / SCANDINAVIA. 1948. 39 3/4x30 1/4 inches, 101x76 3/4 cm. Condition A: minor abrasions and darkening at edges; unobtrusive horizontal fold. While living in the United States after World War II, Kauffer's account for American Airlines was his single largest commission. Between 1946 and 1953, he designed more than 30 posters for the company; some are landscapes and illustrative images, while others were photomontages and Modernist designs. This is one of several posters Kauffer designed featuring an arrow to point toward the destination, here composed of the flags of the Scandinavian countries. It is one of the few posters he designed during this era which resonate with the dynamism of those he devised in Britain before the war. Kauffer 307.
