EDWARD MCKNIGHT KAUFFER (1890-1954) ARCHITECTURE. Gouache maquette. 1934.
21 1/4x15 inches, 54x38 cm.
Condition A-: minor creases and abrasions in margins. Hand-titled and painted on illustration board. Stamped on verso "DESIGNED BY E. MCK KAUFFER 15 FEB 1934."
In addition to being a poster designer, Kauffer had many other artistic interests and outlets for his creativity. He was passionate about the works of Van Gogh, joined the British Vorticist movement, designed murals, created book illustrations and was constantly drawing and painting in gouache and watercolor. While it is unknown what this maquette and the following lot were designed for, they appear to be mural studies of the Muses, although we do not believe they were ever realized. They are stylistically similar to the illustration Kauffer did for T.S. Eliot's poem Marina in 1930. previously unrecorded.
