For several published poems by T.S. Eliot, which Kauffer illustrated in the late 1920s and early 1930s, he "provided designs which at least avoid the prosaic, and open rather than block avenues of interpretation" (Kauffer p. 55). Eliot and Kauffer were quite friendly, and the author, upon presentation of Robinson Crusoe (illustrated by Kauffer), wrote: "I like the illustrations immensely, and some of them have a quality which reminds me of Chirico," a sentiment which can be applied here as well (Kauffer p. 56). previously unrecorded.
