Between 1915 and 1939 Kauffer designed over 140 posters for the London Underground as well as redesigning subway stations, installing murals and much more. This poster takes the common theme of a dramatic mask and adds a shadow seemingly cast by the theatre's lights. The symmetrical typography creates a "stage" in which the mask appears. Kauffer 133.
