EDWARD MCKNIGHT KAUFFER (1890-1954) REIGATE. 1916. 30x20 inches, 76x51 cm. Avenue Press Ltd. Condition B+: tears, staining and wrinkles in upper left corner and margins; loss along left edge and upper right corner. Paper. This is one of the first four posters that Kauffer was commissioned to design by Frank Pick for London Transport system. All four were designed in 1915, but two were issued in 1916. At this early point in his career Kauffer still considered himself to be a painter and these earliest posters "are essentially gouache or poster paint landscapes" (Kauffer p. 15). However, traces of Kauffer's upcoming brilliance and creativity are already apparent. Here, where "the tree trunks are pure scarlet, and fields yellow and red, Kauffer has arrived at poster-Fauvism" (ibid. p. 16). Over the next 25 years Kauffer designed 140 posters for the London Transport system. Underground p. 36, Voyage p. 26.
