EDWARD MCKNIGHT KAUFFER WINTER SALES ARE BEST REACHED BY THE UNDERGROUND. 1922.
40x25 inches. Vincent Brooks day & Son, Ltd., London.
Condition B+: restored losses and repaired tears in margins.
An exceptional image that is one of Kauffer's last Vorticist posters, and in many ways a visual literalization of the movement's tenets. The exact years of the Vorticist Movement in England are often debated (lasting somewhere from 1912-1915), it was one of the few indigenous, progressive art movements to develop in Great Britain. From a term coined by Ezra Pound, the word actually implies "a spiraling force which should draw the viewer into the work, creating a new dynamism and strong focal point. . . .The Vorticists looked for an all over sense of movement drawing the observer into the work toward a distant vortex" (http://users.senet.com.au/~dsmith/vorticism.htm). Kauffer left Vorticism in 1923 "when he realized that [it] no longer offered viable commercial responsibilities" (http://www.aiga.org/content.cfm?contentalias=emcknightkauffer).
