The most exciting event in America in 1893 was the World's Columbian Exhibition in Chicago, the country's first great World's Fair which officially opened on May 1, 1893. Over 27 million people traveled from around the world to visit the fairgrounds and marvel at the many attractions, including the White City, The Court of Honor and the exotic shows of the midway. Here, within half a year of begining his ground-breaking work as a poster designer, Penfield depicts a dapper man (prudently holding an umbrella), getting his bearings within the 633 acre setting.
