EDWARD PENFIELD (1866-1925) ABOUT PARIS. 1895.
14 1/4x9 1/2 inches, 36 1/4x24 cm. Harper & Brothers, [New York].
Condition A: soft creases in image. Paper. Framed.
As art director at Harper's, Penfield was also involved in designing posters for books they published. As the title suggests, this book is a socio-travelogue through France's capital city, covering Paris at night and its various cafe-concerts and music halls, Americans living in Paris, how the French mourned for their late president (Carnot) and other tales of life abroad. For the poster, Penfield strikes a very French chord by depicting the Moulin Rouge and two black cats, à la Steinlen, with whom he shared a love for all felines. DFP I 364.
