EDWARD PENFIELD (1866-1925) ABOUT PARIS. 1895.
15x10 inches, 38x25 1/2 cm. Harper & Brothers, [New York.]
Condition B+: time-staining in margins; minor repaired tears and creases in margins; tipped to mat at top edge; pencil notations in lower right corner. Matted.
As Art Director at Harper's, Penfield was also involved in designing posters for books the magazine published. As the title suggests, this book is a socio-travelogue through France's capital city, covering Paris at night and its various café-concerts and music halls, Americans living in Paris, how the French mourned for their late president (Carnot) and other tales of life abroad. For the poster, Penfield strikes a very French chord by depicting the Moulin Rouge and two black cats, à la Steinlen, with whom he shared a love of all felines. DFP-I 364.
