EDWARD PENFIELD (1866-1925) HARPER'S JUNE. 1896.
18 1/2x13 1/2 inches, 47x34 1/4 cm.
Condition B+: minor tears, abrasions, folds and staining at edges; minor puncture in lower right image; creases along vertical and horizontal folds. Hinged to mat at top and bottom edges. Paper.
By 1896, Penfield had reached the height of his craft, refining his lines, compositions and color schemes to a level of unsurpassed agility. "His figures' clothing had most often been flattened out to abstracted shapes, and backgrounds had been freed of detail, sometimes even eliminated totally for an overall area of color" (Designed to Persuade p. 10). Price refers to this image as "a wonderfully apt instance of the cleverest kind of informality in design, combined with strong value in suggested proportion" (Price p. 235).
