EDWARD PENFIELD (1866-1925) POSTER CALENDAR. Group of 5 sheets. 1896.
Each approximately 14 1/4x11 inches, 36 1/4x28 cm. R.H. Russell & Son, New York.
Condition varies, generally A-: minor mat staining at edges; minor creases and repaired tears at edges, some into image; pencil notations on cover sheet. Paper. Matted and framed as one.
"Perhaps an example of the very best of Mr. Penfield's earlier work. Excellent in composition, color, line and simplicity of action, it seems strongly imbued with the influence of Steinlen . . . [but has] a place of its own among American posters" (Price p. 161). Of the cover, Price writes that the image is "saliently sincere" and he is delighted to announce that its artistic merits warrant that it "could be hung beside Steinlen's Lait pur Sterilisé." This poster calendar was issued in two editions; one in which the pages were printed on both sides, and the second a deluxe edition of 250. This calendar was advertised with a poster bearing the same image as the calendar's cover, the only difference being that the poster did not have Penfield's printed signature in the lower left corner beneath the cat. This lot is a combination of the poster for the calendar and four of the pages from the deluxe edition. Unlike most copies, these sheets do not have punch holes at the top. Affichomanie 140, Kiehl 191, DFP-I 373, Cate & Gill pl. fig. 100, Virginia p. 81, Bargiel & Zagrodzki p. 17.
