Ruggles (1818-1867), a trained physician, took up art as a pastime during his travels in Paris in 1846. Afterwards, he settled in Brooklyn, New York and started a medical practice while continuing to paint landscape scenes. He became a member of the American Art Union by 1847 and was an honorary member of the National Academy in 1851. While initially a hobbyist, he exhibited his work with both organizations. Around 1857, he dedicated himself full-time to his art practice, focusing on miniature landscapes of his travels through Canada, Connecticut and Cape Cod. His small, intimate works were often referred to by collectors as the 'Ruggles Gems."
