Additional Details

Edward Sorel has been a freelance artist since 1957, his work appearing in the form of covers, caricatures, and cartoons across various important publications. Lauded by The New York Timesas "one of America's foremost political satirists," Sorel's witty and cutting illustrations have long taken a bold stance.

This cover for The Atlantic is Sorel's tongue-in-cheek take on controversial journalist Midge Decter's accompanying article, "Toward the New Chastity." Decter's article, criticizing the pursuit of sexual freedom in the Women's Liberation movement, would likely have opposed the perspective that Sorel built his career expressing. His satirical take on the story depicts two masked women with the Women's Liberation symbol emblazoned on their chests leading a frightened, nude man to the guillotine.
