Additional Details

After writing and reaching an agreement to have A Streetcar Named Desire produced, Tennessee Williams found temporary reprieve in a Cape Cod cabin -- and then the plumbing and electricity stopped working. Concurrently, he received word that a young Marlon Brando would be paying him a visit to audition for the part of Stanley Kowalski in the upcoming production. Upon his arrival, Brando fixed the electric and plumbing matters, gave an equally impressive performance, and was soon awarded his breakout role.

The scene was illustrated by important cartoonist Edward Sorel to accompany the column by his wife, Nancy Caldwell Sorel. Mrs. Sorel's column ran for 65-editions, chronicling the first meetings of various important figures. It was later compiled and released as First Encounters: A Book of Memorable Meetings.
