Additional Details

The year 1904 was a fertile period for Steichen. Returning to New York from Europe, he developed a more mature aesthetic sensibility, creating the masterful Moonrise, Mamaroneck, New York and The Flatiron Building at Night, and the moody landscape Horse-Chestnut Blossoms, Long Island, which relied on abstract elements in much the same way as these seascapes.
