Silver print, the image measuring 7½x9½ inches (19.1x24.1 cm.), the mount 13⅝x15⅞ inches (34.6x40.3 cm.), with Weston's initials and negative date in pencil on mount recto, and the negative date and negative notation "43SO" in pencil in Cole Weston's hand on mount verso.

This is the first of the "Soil" images made in November according to Weston's log. [….] As usual, Weston uses the entire frame; this time he includes not only a horizon line but also a sky full of cloud activity, complementing the interaction of shadow and sand below.
