The Caronia and Carmania were the first two ships built as the result of an ambitious shipbuilding program (and generous loan package) from the British government. Each with a 1905 maiden voyage from Liverpool to New York, the press was quick to dub the sister ships "Grand Dames of the Atlantic." At the outbreak of World War I, they were each refitted for military duty and managed to return to commercial service after the war. Weallans p. 43.
