EGBERT NORMAN CLARK (1872 - 1942)
Stork vs. doctor cartoon.

Graphite, ink wash, and gouache on board, circa 1910. 350x560 mm; 13¾x22 inches. Signed "E. N. Clark" in lower right image.

Additional Details

This detailed cartoon depicts a stork delivering a baby to a ramshackle house, as a doctor and a boy look on from the street. This imagery is starkly contrasted by the beautifully rendered background of a street scene populated by well-dressed Edwardian figures and an early automobile and horse-drawn carriage in front of an ornate building - perhaps intended as social commentary.

Egbert Norman Clark was a versatile cartoonist, illustrator, and educator, who had served as art editor of Bobbs Merrill Publishing, as well as art director of the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exhibition in San Francisco. He also gained notoriety as author of "The Golden Crisis," a 1907 book detailing his quite peculiar futurist philosophy.
