In 1980, Edith Shain wrote a friendly letter to Eisenstaedt, in which she identifies herself as the nurse in this iconic image and saying she was too shy to come forward sooner. There have been at least 3 women who claim to be the beguiling nurse in the photo but Shain is the one Eisenstaedt believed. Interestingly, no less than 10 sailors have come forward to identify themselves as the famous kisser.
