ELISHA BROWN BIRD (1867- ?) THE POSTER. 1896.
19x121/2 inches.
Condition A.
An architecture student at M.I.T., Bird took his drafting skills and turned to graphic design, working for such publications as The Inland Printer, The Chap Book, The Red Letter and The Century as well as several publishers. He designed posters advertising the magazines he worked for, books, and even a poster exhibit, and his style was agile, changing from illustrative to decorative. This poster, an excellent example of Bradley-influenced, American Art Nouveau née Arts and Crafts design, was issued to promote a new magazine all about posters. (Not to be confused with the British publication of the same name - which wasn't printed until 1898 - The Poster was an American magazine that was published for less than a year). Known as Miss Art and Miss Litho, the image also appeared on the magazine cover (in different colors every month) in March, April and May. Kiehl 9, not in DFP I.
